Porcelain City of Meissen - Castle Moritzburg - Wackerbarth Castle & Vineyard

Only about 25 minutes from the campsite lies Castle Moritzburg, set amidst a charming landscape of ponds. Duke Moritz of Saxony had it built in the 16th century as a hunting house, and later, August the Strong commissioned the architect of Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, Pöppelmann, to transform it into the magnificent water castle we see today - a royal hunting residence. In recent times, Moritzburg gained fame as the authentic filming location of the beloved fairy-tale classic Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel).

Just a stone’s throw away is the cathedral and porcelain city of Meissen - the cradle of Saxony. It was here, over 1,000 years ago, that Saxony was founded on Albrechtsburg Castle Hill. Climb the picturesque castle hill to visit Albrechtsburg and the Gothic cathedral, once used as the burial site of the Wettin dynasty, or watch master painters at work in the State Porcelain Manufactory, where the world-famous “genuine Meissen” porcelain is still created by hand.

Nearby, along the Saxon Wine Route, the fairy-tale castle and park of Wackerbarth Winery are well worth a visit. Known as Europe’s first “experience winery,” it showcases 850 years of winemaking tradition in Saxony. Once the site of lavish celebrations held by the Saxon court, Schloss Wackerbarth remains a popular venue for weddings and other festive occasions today.
